Practical is an instructive piece on maintaining a desired quality of life (the American Dream) while remaining steadfast and genuine in our Christian faith. Following the advice within these pages will unlock the secret to living a fulfilled, authentic Christian life without giving up all comforts and possessions to live in the streets.

It’s a guide to living the practical Christian life and not adopting a philosophy of guilt that would have us make radical, sacrificial changes in order to be counted as true believers. Charleson includes personal stories and examples of practical living that impacts others, attracts people to the Lord, and leaves a sense of satisfaction in the lives of all involved.

The author has a special perspective on helping yourself in order to help others. Read this book to find revealing information on the development of the following ideas

Being comfortable with who you are.

Finding your purpose in life.

Providing value to others.

Being positive and proactive.

Improving your financial situation.

Showing gratitude by enjoying life.

Practical Embracing Faith and the American Dream edition by JN Charleson Religion Spirituality eBooks

Do you find yourself in a doldrums of life, lacking passion or self-assurance? Are you ready to get up off the bench where you've been waiting for life to happen to you; is it time for you to actually get somewhere on the path of life God has for you? Here is a short book to get you started off on the right foot: Confident positivity and fuel for dreams!

The strength of Practical lies in its persistent upbeat assurances. Charleson could give even the most bowed Eeyore the courage to muster a smile and assault the half-hearted life. He is right when he asserts that God never intended His own to wallow about in crummy half-lived lives of guilt and woe.

I give the inspirational message of this book at least 4 stars.

Charleson's still-developing style is conversational and very easy to read. Like listening to a friend as you sit around the kitchen table. I know the author personally and am excited see his development as a writer in the coming years.

I give the book's readability 4.5 stars and the other areas of style (engaging vocabulary, effective paragraphing, etc) 3 stars.

The weakness of this book is the trouble of the title--ostensibly a reply to David Platt's book Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream. Platt's book is about discipleship--following Jesus--and attempts to accept Jesus' crowd-silencing demands on our life--all of it. In the first part of Practical, Charleson talks a lot about "the American Dream" and argues that God would certainly want us to show gratitude and honor to our Creator by taking full advantage of the wealth of opportunity afforded us here in America. Unfortunately, he fails to adequately address the difficult questions that Platt built his entire book around. Questions like, in light of Christ's command to leave everything to follow him what should my life as a disciple look like? Or, in light of the extreme, often-ignored suffering of people in poverty-stricken, war-torn third world countries, how ought an American disciple of Christ make use of all his resources? These questions and more Platt wrestles with throughout his entire book. Charleson barely, if at all, even gives them a nod. Not every Christian book needs to. But for a book apparently set up as a reply to Radical, Practical is puzzlingly silent in the main areas of concern dealt with by Platt.

My opinion is that Charleson should have stayed away from any challenge to Radical. Change the title. Edit out the few quick barbs he occasionally tosses toward Radical throughout this book. Just let Practical stand on its own for what it is: an inspiring pick-me-up motor fueler for Christians who have succumbed to the doldrums and given up on any dreams they may have once had.

As a rebuttal to Radical, I give Practical 1.5 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed my time in this book. It reads like a short walk down the lane and back with the author--far more appropriate to its message than any long-winded tome could be. Just don't expect to find any in-depth retort to David Platt's controversial first book.

So, all things considered, 3 stars with eager anticipation of Charleson's future offerings.
